I'm back!
First blog post of 2011, and I must say I’m surprised April has dawned on us so quickly! Hope all you uni students are enjoying a much deserved break. We had the interns in at the end of 2010 - coming in to the work environment all fresh from uni not knowing much about audit provided for some quality moments in the audit room. But really, they have been a great bunch and we will no doubt see some...

Introducing our "frightened" summer interns and...
Firstly, hope everyone in Christchurch is doing alright. Our CEO informed us that all our Christchurch employees are safe and accounted for (no pun intended) which is really good to hear, and as Lucy said, amazing that the quake didn’t claim any lives. Thoughts are with everyone there – please stay safe. As for Auckland, our busy season ended with a bang of a different sort last Thursday night,...

My Mid Year experiences - work and play
With busy season approaching I thought I’d squeeze in another little post… The Deloitte Auckland Mid Year event proved to be a hit last Friday – it wasn’t a sit down dinner which meant that we could mix, mingle, and meet our colleagues’ other halves in a casual environment. It turned out to be really true to the theme New York New York as there were different areas representing (to name a...

Winter
Seems like a gloomy way to kick off the week – put into a room with three other people of which I’ve only worked with one of them before, the rain pelting down on the roof overhead. And… I’m not going to lie – sometimes it isn’t always sunshine and roses. However, I take refuge in the fact that together with 99% of the working population, it’s not just me who’s feeling a little grim -...

Applying ACCTG 312
Promotions were announced last Friday, meaning that productivity levels dipped marginally while we found out who made it after this review round. One of my colleagues that I was on the job with last week was part of the fortunate bunch; leaving for the office to pick up his letter at lunch time and coming back with brownies, rocky road, gingerbread men and cappuccinos from Hollywood Bakery to...

My graduation
Together with the other Uni of Auckland grads at Deloitte – some graduating for the second time, some the first, we took our one day of graduation leave and descended upon Auckland city. Don’t know about you, but I found it awesome that the police closed the road just for us – making us feel just that little bit important, albeit for a few brief minutes. The weather was beautiful - bright sun and...

WatchWatch
Hi guys, here’s my film debut! After finishing a busy day on Tuesday, this year’s Audit grads challenged the second and third years to a laser-tag duel at Megazone, Mt Wellington.  Yes, we do work hard, but we play hard too !! Cheers, Michelle

Auditing pasta
The Auckland Audit team is divided into Clusters, each with a mixture of staff at various levels and a focus on different industries within our client base. Each Cluster has 4 events per year which they organise themselves. I’ve heard that these events always bring more than a bit of fun and almost always include a meal, so I was looking forward to attending my first one! Between an Italian...

Getting to know my colleagues
I haven’t even been at Deloitte for 2 months, yet it is evident that there are no shortages of events that give us a chance to get to know our colleagues. In February, a firm wide Beach Barbeque was organised by our social committee. Many attended with their partners and families in tow. There was an onsite barbeque catering company so we were never short of food or drink. In addition, three...

Training experiences
It was our fourth week at Deloitte and once again, all the Audit grads were flown up to Auckland to attend our week long training. We were also joined by the Enterprise Risk Services grads. It all seemed a bit too much when we were briefed at the start but we soon realised that in conjunction with a heap of learning, there was also some fun to be had. Teams of 4 were delegated by our facilitators...

Cameras, buckets, action
So life in the real world has begun and honestly, it’s not anywhere near as daunting as I thought it was going to be. Five weeks ago, almost 90 grads arrived in their various offices, ready and eager. Our first two days consisted of going through the usual admin procedures and getting set up with our laptops/swipe cards and the like. On Wednesday, all the grads nationwide converged in...
